NEW DELHI, Jan 19—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal, MP said here today that the Scheduled Caste community of Delhi was solidly behind the Congress and the party will retain power in the coming Assembly elections in Delhi with their support. Shri Agarwal said this while addressing a convention of the scheduled caste community at Rajiv Bhawan, the DPCC office, here today, which was organised by SC Department chairman Shri Lal Chand Chandelia.

The convention began after Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal honoured veteran Congress leader and Speaker of the Delhi Assembly Ch. Prem Singh with a shawl. Around 30 leaders spoke at the convention, giving a detailed account of their views and opinions for the uplift of the SC community with the convention lasting around four hours. The convention was attended by the top leaders of the scheduled caste community, including Member of Parliament, MLAs and Municipal Councillors.

Besides Shri Agarwal, prominent others who attended the convention were Ch. Prem Singh, Smt. Krishna Tirath, MP, AICC secretary and MLA Shri Jai Kishan, SC Department Chairman Shri Lal Chand Chandelia, MLAs Amrish Gautam, Brahmpal, Surinder Kumar, Charan Singh Khandera, Malaram Gangwal, Rajesh Lilothia, Veer Singh Dhingan, ex-Executive Councillor Krishan Swaroop, ex-MLAs Roop Chand, Motilal Bakholia, Darshana Ramkumar, former mayor A.R.Verma, DPCC treasurer Shri Madan Khorwal, Raj Kumar Indoria, Municipal Councillors Rakesh Rajora, Prithvi Singh Rathore, Harish Kumar, Raj Rani Jatav, Beena Dhakolia, Smt. Anjana, Kumari Geeta, DPCC secretaries Sunderlal Ghavri, Gopal Pahadia, Kishanpal Jatav, Hariram Bairwa and Shivram Singh.

Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal said the Delhi Government has been initiating various schemes and projects, from time to time, for the welfare and benefit of the scheduled caste community. He said the future of the scheduled caste community was safe in the hands of the Congress party as Congress was the only political party which understood the problems of the Scheduled Castes and devised various schemes to solve them to give them a better life.

Shri Agarwal said the Congress Government in Delhi had implemented various schemes and projects for the welfare of the Scheduled Community and the party would not tolerate any move to slow down or scuttle the welfare projects for scheduled castes. Shri Agarwal said the Congress Party, under the dynamic leadership of Smt. Sonia Gandhi, would do everything to realise the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar for the total uplift of the scheduled caste and to fully integrate them into the mainstream of life.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Ch. Prem Singh assured the SC community that their future would be safe in the Congress as the party had initiated various projects and schemes to improve their lot. He exhorted the Scheduled Caste community to work for the interest of the Congress party and foil designs of those who were working only for their self interest without doing anything concrete for the larger interest of the community.

Ch. Prem Singh said with the strength of unity, the SC community could achieve their goals and Congress was the only politically party the SCs could depend upon to serve their interest. Ch. Prem Singh said the SC community in Delhi were very vigilant and always supported the Congress Party and would continue to do so. He requested the Government to make proper provision in the Union budget to make necessary schemes and projects for the uplift of the SC community and give them a level-playing field in the society. He said the Congress Party had always taken concrete and creative steps to improve the lot of the SCs and the community can look forward to better times under Congress rule in the country. He said by following the path charted out by Dr Ambedkar, the Congress Party had always given priority for the uplift of the SC community.

Smt. Krishna Tirath, MP from Karol Bagh in Delhi, said the Congress Party has been initiating several steps for the improvement of the condition of the SC community and the community was reaping the benefits now. She said the Congress Party has been working towards providing food, shelter and employment to the SC community and the various schemes have helped the SCs improve their living conditions considerably. She said the SC community would spare no effort in ensuring the victory of the Congress party in the Delhi Assembly elections this year.

AICC secretary Jai Kishan said it was essential for the scheduled caste community to support the Congress Party to defeat the designs of those whose agenda was to capture power by using the SC votes without contributing anything in return for the community's betterment. He said only the Congress Party could protect the interest of the SC community and therefore it was the duty of the community to stand solidly behind the Congress at all times. He said no party in Delhi would be able to defeat the Congress if the SC community stood solidly behind the Congress party. He said Dr Ambedkar's thoughts were very much relevant now and it was the duty of the Congress Party to put his thoughts into action to liberate the SC community from their backwardness.

DPCC SC Department chairman Shri Lal Chand Chandelia said Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi was giving a lot of importance to improve the condition of the poor and the SC community not only in Delhi but also the whole of India which the SC community should fully back by extending their unconditional support to the Congress party at regional and national level. He said the importance accorded by the Congress Party to the uplift of the SC community has boosted their morale and they were now looking forward to a bright and rosy future. Shri Chandelia assured DPCC president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal that the SC community would always remain the backbone of the Congress party to help it win the electoral battles in Delhi.
