NEW DELHI, Jan. 11---Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal, MP said former Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Bhastri was an iconic figure who, during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India, gave a new direction to the country. Shri Agarwal said this today while addressing a meeting of presidents of Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, NSUI, Sewa Dal, and chairpersons of all the cells of the DPCC. Before the meeting, two minutes' silence was observed to pay homage to the memory of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary.

Shri Agarwal said it was time people imbibed the thoughts and deeds of Shastriji in their daily life to make it richer as the late Prime Minister had led a very simple and upright life despite occupying the top most office in the country, which was a great lesson in simplicity and humility.

Shri Agarwal said Shastriji had a very humble background, and with dint of hard work, simplicity, honesty and patriotism, he climbed to the top to become the Prime Minister of India, and gave a very firm and dynamic leadership and direction to the country when it was going through one of the most testing times in history. He said Shastriji never wavered from his path of honesty and integrity to make India one of the strongest nations, and the stock of the country rose in the eyes of the world when Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji was at the helm of the Government.

Shri Agarwal said during the war with Pakistan, Shastriji advocated the countrymen to abstain from food one time a day to give their support to the country's efforts to foil the designs of the enemy, and with the solid backing of the whole country, Shastriji led the country to victory over Pakistan and guide it on the path of progress and development.

Those who were present at the meeting were DPYC president Amit Malik, NSUI president Harsh Choudhary, Sewal In-Charge P.M.Gurung, Traders' Cell chairman Prem Chand Gadodia, Minority Department chairman Mirza Javed Ali, Sports Cell chairman C.K.Khanna, Poorvanchal Cell chairman Shivram Pandey, SC Department chairman Lal Chand Chandelia, Teachers' Cell chairman B.K.Bhasin, Grievances Cell chairman Dr. P.L.Palta, Industrial Cell chairman Shri Rajinder Gupta, Ex-Servicemen Cell chairman Maj. Shri Agarwal said the workers of various cells of the DPCC should now actively get involved in the affairs of the people to win their trust and confidence as the elections to the Delhi Assembly would be held later this year and the Congress Party workers should spare no effort to ensure the victory of the Congress party for a third time in a row in Delhi.

He said it was essential to make people-to-people contact to popularise the programmes and policies of the Congress Party and the first priority of the party workers should be to ensure Congress' victory in the ensuing Assembly elections in Delhi. He said under the dynamic leadership of Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi, the party workers, forgetting their personal problems, should get involved in the problems of the people and solve them to gain their faith and trust, which has been a tradition of the party, and with such an approach and mindset, the Congress party could win any battle it sets out to win.

Shri Agarwal said there should be a feeling of mutual respect and love in the party and they should help each other in times of crises. He said the BJP was a party without issues which never tried to protect the interest of Delhi. He said for the larger interest of Delhi and its development, it was essential to ensure the victory of the Congress Party in the Delhi Assembly elections for the third time in a row.
